Analysis of Alex Lloyd-What We Started

Background information on Alex Lloyd
After careful research on Alex Lloyd, I came across some background information on my chosen artist. I discovered that he is a Australian songwriter who was born in 1974.
Although I chose this song because it was not very well known as it only has 18,984 views on YouTube and it has a lot of potential to create a good music video. Alex Lloyd created and produced many songs, and received lots of awards, and to my surprise, "What We Started" is his newest song which was released in 2009.

The Analysis
The song choice of Alex Lloyd-What We Started commences with a fade transition from black to a black and white scene in the coffee shop to show the establishing shot. A fast pace editing of "beating" occurs, and whilst this takes place, a shot of the coffee shop from behind the counter is shown. The main male character is then introduced, as a customer ordering from the coffee shop. The camera changes from a long shot to a medium shot as he stands behind the counter. As this happens, the beat of the song starts as well as the continuation of the beating.

The male character is shown dressed in a suit, with messy hair and a slight stubble on the chin. This could mean he is employed or likes to dress smartly, but could be feeling fed up or unhappy about something or someone and this is what makes the listener/viewer ponder on the genre and lyrics of the song. The camera then changes to watch him walk to the table on his own by the window. A "over the shoulder" shot is then shown to show his face as a medium shot then what he is looking at, outside. The view changes to rain, showing a miserable day and people rushing around with umbrellas. The weather influences the mood, and shows the sadness he could be feeling due to his emotionless face.

There is not too much too analysis about this video, as there is one location and one thing happening the whole time, meaning the video editing, movement and mise-en-scene gets repetitive and the same. The lyrics do not relate to the video in the way that the narrative based music video is about a man drawing a woman dressed as a pirate, which is abnormal. The lyrics base the meaning of missing someone, memories, old times or events happened in the past, but this video doesn't help the lyrics at all. However, lots of close up and medium shots are used with slow pace of editing, which does contribute to the rhythm of the song. However, after watching the video several times, I reliased that the lyrics "What we started, here today.." plays at the end of the song when the woman stands back outside so he can draw her, and as they exchange smiles, it could be the start of a friendship.

Chosen Song

Our chosen song choice is "Alex Lloyd-What We Started."

Lyrics: Alex Lloyd-What We Started
  • So we rise to fall again
Every cut will scar and mend
It gets blurred between the lines
When the truth gets left behind

Do you know what we started
    Know what we started
Know what we started here today

Do you know what we started
    Know what we started
Know what we started here today

When the light starts to shine
If I am yours and you are mine
And when the bell starts to ring
And the truth begins to sing

Do you know what we started
    Know what we started
Know what we started here today

When the cracks they start to form
Like the calm before the storm
    Sometimes high and sometimes low
On a long and winding road

Do you know what we started
    Know what we started
Know what we started here today

When the light starts to shine
If I am yours and you are mine
And when the bell starts to ring
And the truth begins to sing

And when the light starts to shine
If I am yours and you are mine
And when the bell starts to ring
And the truth begins to sing

Do you know what we started
    Know what we started
Know what we started here today

Do you know what we started
    Know what we started
Know what we started here today

Do you know what we started
    Know what we started
Know what we started here today

Inital Song Choice Ideas

After searching through YouTube for songs which give the lyrics with meaningful words which will allow us to do a narrative music video, Emma and myself have come up with 3 possible song choices we want to look further into.

Our first song choice is Gary Go-Open Arms.
We found this after searching for a while and thinking that we needed a artist who was not well known but produced a song which fit in the genre. The video consisted of memories from a younger childhood of wanting to be a astronaut, and then him growing and changing as a person, and reaching his dream goal and job ambition. The narrative story goes through his life experiences, going to mars etc. The camera movement and effects consists of close ups, showing emotions and feelings in the facial area, as well as special effects like fire, space and the moon. The lyrics relate to the music video with words like "I’ve gotta take these chances where they are, And it’s gonna be alright, I’ve gotta see things for what they are, At the time, at the time."

The second song we found was Alex Lloyd-What We Started.
We found that this was a powerful lyrical song with ability for a narrative video. The video did not relate to the lyrics but the effects were good. The whole video was modified to be in black and white, and the video was also narrative, as there was no one singing but just acting a scenario. Some of the lyrics include "When the light starts to shine, If I am yours and you are mine, And when the bell starts to ring And the truth begins to sing" which tells a story, but this does not show in the video. The video includes a average man in a coffee shop sketching a woman outside dressed as a pirate. This is very unique and intriguing but confusing as I felt that this should relate to the lyrics.

The fourth and final song we looked at was One Republic-Mercy.
The video consisted of the group of 4 men playing their music and instruments on a sandy beach. The effects of the video have been made so that the video is neither black or white or sepia, but a mix of both, as well as the modifications being made to the brightness and contrast to give it a unique look to the video. The video is not very narrative as a story is not easily made, and the lyrics state "All I wanted to say, All I wanted to do, Is fall apart now, All I wanted to feel, I wanted to love, It's all my fault now, A Tragedy for sure" which does not relate at all to the music video.

Starting Point

The first step towards making a music video is thinking of ideas, genres and the narrative storyline. Working in a group with Emma Maher made us think about what kind of songs we wanted to choose. We came up with the genre of Indie/Rock themed. Below I have shown a diagrams which I got off of www.uktribes.co.uk, which helped us make our decision for the genre.

We decided to create a narrative video which means that we would have to shoot a story for the video rather than live from a group or band. We felt this would work better to give the listener or watcher a story to look at and something to relate the lyrics to, as well as showing our skills alike camera movement, angles, mise-en-scene and sounding.
